A Christian Counselling Therapist is trained in pastoral counseling to serve the spirit, but also through experience, continuing education, and self-study, enlisting professional critique, and is knowledgeable in basic general therapeutic skills. This is all, of course, without breaking confidentiality. This will also enable them to work with resources in the local community.

Some Christian Counseling Therapists are not in proximity to the counselee or the counselees. An example of this may be marital counseling or premarital counseling. It is common in Westernized culture today for premarital counseling to be a requirement before marriage. This requirement may be state-mandated or it may be required by the person(s) to officiate the wedding. There is also a growing trend of pre-divorce counseling. In certain states, before you can file for a divorce, you must go through marriage counseling for a certain time period. Being that this is not just the information age but also the technology age, it is likely to become more prevalent for Christian counseling therapist to employ virtual counseling settings.
